About Petaltrail
Petaltrail is a free web app that tells you the name of a plant from a single photo and collects everything you find into your own field guide. It runs at petaltrail.com with nothing to install, and opens like an app once added to your home screen.
What you can do
- Name a plant — snap a flower, tree or weed and get likely names in seconds.
- Your own field guide — every find becomes a page, and where you found it becomes a pin on the map.
- Treasure hunt — plants others found nearby that are not in your guide yet appear on your map as ❓. Follow the hints, find it, snap it.
- Seasonal quests and badges — goals each season, like meeting new plants or collecting different plant families.
- Public plant pages — photos from users and sightings per month, gathered plant by plant in the field guide.
Where names and descriptions come from
- Photo identification: Pl@ntNet
- Scientific names, taxonomy and names in each language: GBIF, Wikidata, and the Korea National Arboretum plant database
- Field guide text: written by AI from the scientific name. It may contain mistakes; uncertain names are corrected by user votes.
Never use this service to decide whether a plant is safe to eat or use as medicine. Identification can be wrong.
Privacy
Photo locations are blurred to about 1 km by default, and public plant pages never show nicknames or locations. See the Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.
